GLI is focused on imparting individual knowledge and skills of smallholder farmers and people with limited economic opportunities in Africa with sustainable land management and modern crop production to be able to deliver food crops and value-added products directly to consumers using environmentally friendly delivery systems.

Modernising agriculture in Africa requires comprehensive research and development to optimise crop yield, manage land, innovate, as well as comply with modern standardisation. This is why GLI has incorporated an agricultural research institute into the core of its project, leveraging on partnerships with institutions and experts worldwide.

Our Crowd Farming strategy is designed to allow everybody to participate in agriculture without necessarily tilling the ground. Our crowd farming strategy also allows our individual partners to adopt parts of our cultivated lands to receive direct farm-to-table fresh and wholesome food crops.

All GLI farm enclaves are set up in permaculture inspired themes to allow our partner consumers to visit and experience, firsthand, how their food crops are cultivated and be given the opportunity to try things out hands-on activities on the farm, including interacting with our farm animals, touring our facilities with serene and relaxed hospitality.

The Green Leben Initiative (GLI) is a programme initiated by the German-registered social business organisation-Zukunft Fuer Das Leben guG (ZfL). It is purposed as an integrated agricultural value chain for Africa. GLI was instituted in Germany as a project operated by a group of like-minded people living in Africa, Germany, the UK, Portugal and Turkey. Our conviction is borne out of the realisation that despite the immense economic potential of agriculture as the key to Africa’s true development, agricultural resources remain largely untapped on the continent.

Yet, the World Bank and other global agencies continue to predict that by 2030, agriculture will add some 1.5 trillion dollars to Africa’s Gross Domestic Product, which currently stands at approximately 2.5 trillion annually.

GLI has, therefore, created a unique agricultural supply chain model dubbed “from farm to the dining table”, which involves setting up agricultural enclaves across Africa in partnership with smallholder farmers and the marginalised in the society maximise crop yield and consequently supply fresh food crops directly to consumers using eco-friendly tricycles and mobility systems. All of these, without the characteristic labyrinth of middlemen whose mark-ups add to the high cost of food in Africa.

Project Regions

Germany

GLI was founded in Germany as part of the integrated agricultural programme for Africa initiated through the Germany-registerd social business Zukunft Fuer Das Leben GuG (ZfL)

\

Portugal

Portugal, with its strategic position and location as a bridge between Africa and Europe, serves as the international market linkage for all the agricultural commodities from Africa. Essentially, Portugal is the Clearing House.

Sierra Leon’s difficult recent history, has made it pragmatic and is consequently receptive to innovative solutions to its economy. GLI with its local partners are therefore exploiting opportunities in crops like Sour-sop/Graviola, etc.

\

Ghana

GLI has a strong foothold, being our first project. We were actively involved with the Hempire Association of Ghana (HAG) in successful advocacy for the decriminalisation of industrial hemp in the country.

\

Tanzania

With a partnership with the Free Pentecostal Church of Tanzania (FPCT), GLI is focusing on exploring the immense cashew resources in Tanzania as well as cultivating some other high-value crops.

Nigeria

Nigeria is easily the biggest market in Africa. With land banks totalling some 2000 hectares, GLI has forged strong partnerships to cultivate high-value crops such as onion, maize, animal husbandry, etc.

\

Uganda

Uganda is within the fertile crescent of Africa and is home to promising high-value crops. With a partnership with US-based Shine Bridge Global Inc. GLI is particularly exploring the entire value chain of Orange Flesh Sweet Potatoes (OFSP).

\

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has vast lands for agriculture with a suitable climate and soil for cultivating high-yielding crops. Currently, GLI and its partners are involved in the process of rolling out a vast industrial hemp plantation, as well as other in-demand crops.

\

South Africa

We and our partners in South Africa have access to over 600 hectares of land in the Kwazulu Natal province, where GLI will replicate its agricultural model for industrial hemp, medicinal cannabis, and several other high-value crops.

\

Namibia

We and our partners in South Africa have access to over 600 hectares of land in the Kwazulu Natal province, where GLI will replicate its agricultural model for industrial hemp, medicinal cannabis, and several other high-value crops.
